Begun as a modest experiment in 1979, New WORLD Theater has become a regional arts leader, earning a national reputation as a visionary cultural institution. New WORLD Theaters central focus is theater work which traditionally has remained at the periphery; its primary mission is the presentation and production of works by playwrights of color. In residence at the Fine Arts Center of the University of Massachusetts, New WORLD Theater has redefined the role of the arts in higher learning. It has purposely blurred the lines between professional and community, art and politics, scholarship and activism. For nearly two decades it has created what has been described as the new American audience, reflecting both on-stage and in the audience the realities, visions, and dreams of disparate and intersecting communities.

For ticket information call the Fine Arts Center Box Office at 545-2511 or 1-800-999-UMAS

The Research Center, founded in 1991, supports scholarly and creative work in womens studies by: 1) providing visiting residencies for feminist scholars, teachers, artists, and activists from the United States and abroad 2) creating a structure for Five College faculty, local community activists, and teachers with research interests in womens studies to discuss, critique, and facilitate one anothers work 3) sponsoring faculty seminars, community workshops, and networking events on topics of importance to womens studies organizing national and international conferences on scholarship and teaching in womens studies 4) encouraging the use of archival collections on women in the Five College area

The core of the Centers program is a colloquium series on Tuesday evenings where Research Associates present their work. These colloquia are free and open to the public, and receptions after the talks provide opportunities for faculty and students in womens studies to meet members of the local community with shared interests. There is also a works-in-progress series on Monday afternoons where local faculty, Community Associates, writers, and activists present their work for comment and response.

The Center is located in Dickinson House on the Mount Holyoke College campus. Associates, whether from the Five Colleges or elsewhere, apply to the Center for varying terms of residency ranging from a semester to a year. The deadline for applications is early February of each year. Associateships are announced by mid-April.
