"My Pattern of Life:" Gender, Sexuality, and the Left in Pauli Murray's Political Vision

Pauli Murray (1910-1985) had a long and distinguished career as a civil rights activist, feminist, lawyer, poet andEpiscopal priest. This paper explores how her political and professional path intersected whit her personal negotiations of her same-sex desires and gender identity. Murray embraced what I call an anti-Communist left liberalism, whichoffered for her the "nearest route" to changing society. Murray found within this framework an emphasis on democratic inclusion and transformation that proved a sustaining theme throughout her life. Indeed, these ideological investments andaffiliations were informed by and informed Murray's negotiations of her own gender identity and same-sex desires. Thus the paper examines how Murray's mobilized Socialist party influenced-left liberalism to carve out her own personal and political life path. In so doing, the paper highlight the ways, anti-Communist left liberalism created ideological and organizational spaces that were at times accepting of same-sex desire and gender non-conformity, even as such issues were never  explicitly addressed.
