Appendix B: The CDSJ Process
CDSJ Operating Principles
These principles articulate how this approach to CDSJ issues is "new" at UMass Amherst:
Integrated Into the University's Mission
- Historically, CDSJ concerns have not been explicitly linked to the campus mission of teaching,
research and outreach. In this new approach, CDSJ concerns and efforts are seen as critical components
for achieving our mission and become fully integrated into the core goals and values of the campus.
Proactive Rather Than Reactive Management
-
In the past, the predominant style of management of CDSJ concerns had been a reactive one.
Change efforts were driven by incidents, crises and protests. This new approach encourages the campus at
every level to: (1) set goals and pursue activities which support community, diversity, and social
justice issues; and (2) anticipate issues and respond appropriately before crises arise.
Change Driven By Information
- The new approach aims at gathering and disseminating system information regarding CDSJ matters on
a regular basis, and using this information to drive change. This information includes:
- demographics/representation: recruitment, retention, promotion
- climate/environment: comfort and safety level
- intercultural competency: the sophistication of faculty, staff and students with CDSJ issues
- leadership commitment: providing resources and incentives for change
An Emphasis on Results
- Previously, CDSJ initiatives were often undertaken without clear expectations about what was to
be achieved. Now, the outcomes and criteria for success are specified prior to developing policy and
program initiatives.
Implemented in All Divisions and Departments
- For the past 30 years, most persons with CDSJ responsibilities have been placed within central
administration or in small advocacy offices located in Student Affairs. This new approach focuses CDSJ
information-gathering, problem-solving and action at the level of individual divisions and departments.
Focus on Accountability at the Local Level
- In the past, responsibility for CDSJ issues was diffuse. Within the CDSJ Operating Principles,
responsibility for specific changes lies at the division and department level.
