A Rapid Response System For Prediction And Management Of Phytophthora Diseases In Massachusetts Farms Using Risk Mapping And Real Time PCR

Phytophthora species rank as some of the most devastating disease agents in Massachusetts farms. Current disease forecasting models for Phytophthora were developed for use over large areas and cannot provide the resolution to adequately predict disease outbreaks at the farm-scale in Massachusetts. The most fundamental component of effective risk maps is accurate data on the current distribution of the targeted pathogen, without which they cannot accurately predict where and how a pathogen may spread. This project will develop a system for gathering data at a farm-scale level.

Agricultural Learning Center

In 2013, UMass started the Agricultural Learning Center (“ALC”) as a hands-on living “classroom” or field laboratory for undergraduates, graduate students and residents of Massachusetts to pursue active learning about all forms of agriculture. The ALC will provide experiential learning opportunities in a wide variety of farming, horticultural, nursery and landscape industries. With small areas devoted to livestock, fruits, vegetables, turf, and landscape crops, the ALC will offer a broad array of agricultural topics to both UMass students and the general public.

Archaeology, Heritage, and Conservation in Akko, Israel

This project combines excavation, conservation, heritage studies, and community engagement at the site of Akko, Israel, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The project is a run by faculty from Penn State, UMass Amherst, Trinity College, and the University of Haifa. Students learn archaeological excavation and survey methods on the remains of a site that has been inhabited for more than 5000 years. They experience the role played by the distant past in today's political and cultural discourses, and work with stakeholders from communities in Akko to determine the future of the past at the site.

Campus and Community Coalition to Reduce High-Risk Drinking

The Campus and Community Coalition to Reduce High-Risk Drinking is an active partnership of campus and community stakeholders that takes a data-driven, comprehensive approach to combating the many problems related to excessive drinking among students. Using environmental management strategies, the coalition is working to change the environment in which individuals and groups live and make decisions about their health. The CCC’s successful approach has helped decrease dangerous drinking among UMass students by as much as 27% since 2005.

Center for Educational Assessment

The Center for Educational Assessment provides technical expertise in areas such as test development, item response theory applications, equating, standard setting, test selection and evaluation, and program evaluation. The Center is a valuable resource for educational policy makers and others who use tests to make important decisions regarding individuals, organizations or institutions.

Center for Women and Community

The Everywoman’s Center changed its name to The Center for Women and Community in September of 2012. CWC supports and encourages women and is a nationally recognized leader in achieving gender equity. The center offers services to people of all genders throughout the campus and the greater community. These services include information, referral, counseling, training, support groups and education in many areas. Individual counseling, crisis intervention and rape crisis services are offered for Hampshire County, the Five Colleges and UMass Amherst.

CIE and IGH at UMass work with Kabul Medical University

The Academy for Education Development in consortium with three U.S universities will work through the Higher Education Project to strengthen The Kabul Medical University in Afghanistan. UMass Amherst's participation is being led by its Center for International Education and the Institute for Global Health to work in partnership with Kabul Medical University, Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Public Health. Their goal is to create a new School of Public Health and designing a new Masters in Public Health.

Citizen Planner Training Collaborative

Citizen Planner Training Collaborative (CPTC) provides local planning and zoning officials with tools to make effective decisions regarding their community's current and future land use. It provides training workshops delivering a Level I and Level 2 core curriculum, taught twice a year across the state by expert attorneys and professional planners. Internet access to core training units, a bylaw collection, many planning related links, training calendars, and e-mail discussion. On-demand training to any community needing to focus on a specific topic.

Citizen Scholars Program

The Citizen Scholars Program is a 2-year curricular civic leadership program that partners with community organizations to work toward community goals and help students develop the knowledge, skills, and vision they need to build community, be effective citizens, and advocate for social justice. Students in CSP complete four required service-learning courses taken in sequence over 4 semesters. In the courses, each student articulates his or her vision of how society would be organized if it truly were good, then develops a series of tools to work toward that vision.
