Extension 4-H Youth Development Program

The Extension 4-H Youth Development Program works with a network of several thousand adult volunteers to provide active learning opportunities to tens of thousands of Massachusetts youth ages 5-18. These opportunities are provided through 4-H clubs and other forms in varied topics including Animal Science, Communications, Community Service, Science/Engineering /Technology (SET) and Leadership. It is a program of UMass Extension and the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

Massachusetts Operation Military Kids Program

Massachusetts Operation Military Kids (OMK) supports children of military service members before, during and after deployment by building statewide networks that educate citizens on the impact of deployment on communities, families and youth, as well as providing educational, recreational and social programs for children of military families. It is a program of the Extension 4-H Youth Development Program, UMass Extension and the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

Tourism Initiatives -- Economic Impact Studies for Regional Air Shows

Research projects on the impact of various tourism-related programs held at Westover Air Base in Chicopee, at Barnes Air Field in Westfield, and in Holyoke are conducted as demonstration projects for the Greater Springfield Metro Area and the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. The results are used to inform the public and elected officials of the value and impact of tourism-related events that often bring thousands of non-local visitors to Western Massachusetts. The results are disseminated as written reports and verbal presentations.

UMass Extension

UMass Extension is the Massachusetts partner in the national Cooperative Extension System. It brings educational opportunities and resources in non-credit formats to people, businesses, farms and communities across the Commonwealth. Cooperative Extension was founded in Massachusetts in 1911 and nationally in 1914. UMass Extension focuses on agriculture, commercial horticulture, the environment, water resources, nutrition education and 4-H youth development. Extension activities are conducted by professional staff educators and by faculty members from UMass Amherst.
