Center for Women and Community

The Everywoman’s Center changed its name to The Center for Women and Community in September of 2012. CWC supports and encourages women and is a nationally recognized leader in achieving gender equity. The center offers services to people of all genders throughout the campus and the greater community. These services include information, referral, counseling, training, support groups and education in many areas. Individual counseling, crisis intervention and rape crisis services are offered for Hampshire County, the Five Colleges and UMass Amherst.

Supporting STEM Teaching and Learning through Communities

S²TLC is building and supporting a community and pipeline of STEM educators that explore deep content knowledge, inquiry-based and culturally responsive practices, and the integration of technology in grades 6-12 STEM classrooms. Face-to-face and virtual communities of practice are hallmarks of the project that will connect teachers in western Massachusetts during and beyond the project. It is a six-year NSF-funded partnership of UMass Amherst, Greenfield, Holyoke, and Springfield public schools, Mahar Regional school district and Hitchcock Center for the Environment.

Riverside Industries Employment Services Partnership

The Riverside Industries Employment Services Partnership provides opportunities within our Special Projects grounds crew for people with developmental disabilities to find meaningful work they enjoy. Residential Life Operating Funds are used to employ a job coach from Riverside Enterprises and four Riverside clients, who are hired as University of Massachusetts hourly employees, and Residential Life employees provide program assistance and coordination.

The Outsmart Invasive Species Project

The goal of the Outsmart Invasive Species Project is to strengthen ongoing invasive-species monitoring efforts in Massachusetts by enlisting help from citizens. Using web- and smartphone-based approaches, volunteers identify and collect data on invasive species in their own time, with little or no hands-on training. Because increasing numbers of people are equipped with smartphone technology, this approach will expand the scope of invasive-species monitoring, and is an effort to help control outbreaks of new or emergent invasive species that threaten our environment.

The Sunwheel Project

The long-running Sunwheel Project involves the construction of sun wheels all over the world starting at UMass Amherst. The project brings a greater awareness and understanding of astronomy to school children, University community members and the general public. In Amherst, the sunwheel - located south of the football stadium - is a gathering spot for people to visit and learn about the sky together through regular public gatherings posted on the website (and usually timed with the equinox and solstice events).

Resource Economics Practicum: Food Bank of Western MA

In this service-learning class, students did work to evaluate the adequacy of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits in Western MA in cooperation with the Food Bank of Western MA. They found that the current formula used by SNAP to determine the benefits of participants needs to be updated to capture the experience of people living in Western MA—particularly to reflect food and housing costs that are higher than the national average.

Academic Practice Partnership: Nursing Leaders & Baystate Health

The College of Nursing at UMass & Baystate Health have a partnership designed to address the goals of all partners. This partnership has many outcomes including multiple sustained evidence based educational, clinical practice, and organizational programs. Some examples are three successful dedicated education units (DEUs), new models for Nursing policy review, a systematic evaluation of the Shared Governance Structure, a program evaluation of the Nursing Falls Prevention program, and a new research based individualized Falls Risk Assessment tool.

jubilat / Jones Reading Series

The jubilat / Jones Reading Series brings to Amherst a variety of new and established poets to read in tandem with poets who live closer to Amherst and Western Massachusetts. Every jubilat / Jones poet travels to Amherst with the help of a $200 honorarium, which the series is able to offer through the generosity of the Friends of the Jones Library and Amherst Cultural Council. Dara Wier (UMass-Amherst MFA Program for poets and writers) is co-founder and co-director of the series.

Advanced Practicum in School Psychology

This Advanced Practicum in School Psychology is centered around engaging with school communities and is the work of the School Outreach Team at the UMass Psychological Services Center. School Psychology doctoral students have the opportunity to engage in both a didactic seminar and as consultants in schools to help schools/districts develop and implement systems of positive behavioral support and data-based decision-making. To date, students have worked in over 20 schools in Western MA in districts such as Amherst, Holyoke, Westfield, Mohawk Trail, Southern Berkshire, etc.

Explorations in Psychological Practice

Explorations in Psychological Practice is a service-learning capstone Honors Seminar and provides students opportunities to interact with participants in programs provided by schools or human service agencies; to understand personal reactions to experiences with people different from themselves; and to learn the benefits of civic engagement. The service learning component consists of a practicum placement in a school or human services agency from 6-8 hours a week.

SuperCuts SoccerFest

SuperCuts SoccerFest is organized by the Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management at UMass Amherst and supported by the Sport Event Management class. Representing one of the leading Sport Management Programs in the world, it is dedicated to organizing and running Supercuts SoccerFest with the utmost professionalism. This program creates a unique setting to bring the community together, promoting healthy competition as well as an active lifestyle, and providing a day full of entertainment and fun for all attendees!

Laboratory in Clinical Psychology: Hampshire County Jail and House of Corrections

Students provide direct services in two settings in this laboratory-based class. In the first, after training to become Certified Decisional Trainers, students meet for weekly sessions to conduct a manual Cognitive Behavior Therapy problem-solving treatment with a person currently incarcerated in the Hampshire County Jail and House of Corrections.

Field School in Heritage Archaeology

The field school recently partnered with the W.E.B. Du Bois National Historic Site, an organization in Great Barrington supporting the development of a community wide plan to celebrate the work of W.E.B. Du Bois, with the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association’s project to present the African American history of Franklin County, and with the Pan African History Museum USA of Springfield a community based museum that presents the African American history of the Springfield area. In the past we have also worked with Historic Deerfield, Inc., a regional museum of New England history.

Jewish Literature: Film and Text

An offshoot of the People of the Book Discussion Group founded many years ago, this initiative combines literature with its cinematic adaptations. Amherst Cinema hosts the event which typically begins at 7:00 pm with a screening of the film followed by a scholar-led discussion of the film and the book paired with it.

Treehouse Foundation of Easthampton

The Rudd Adoption Research Program has been involved with the Treehouse community on many levels. Treehouse is an inter-generational community in which elders and families with youth, who are or were in foster care, live together in an effort to support the youth.

Adoption Mentoring Partnership

The Adoption Mentoring Partnership program is a collaboration between the Rudd Adoption Research Program in the Psychology Department at UMass, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Hampshire County. This unique program seeks to match UMass students who are adopted with children in the community who are also adopted. Matched across a variety of factors, the mentors and the children are able to form friendships grounded in the similarities between them including their gender, race, ethnicity, and adoption story.

Springfield Armory Alliance

Faculty member is a board member of the Springfield Armory Alliance, which is the public board of the Springfield Armory, a National Historic Site managed by the National Parks Service in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Springfield Armory holds a special place in the history of the Pioneer Valley as a major contributor to the Valley's regional planning, economic development, and contributions to innovation.

Ongoing Partnership with the Trustees of Reservations

This program is an ongoing partnership between the UMass Amherst Public History Program and the Trustees of Reservations, an organization that preserves, for public use and enjoyment, over 100 properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts. Student projects have included the development of a youth program for the William Cullen Bryant Homestead; the award-winning project “Elizabeth Freeman: A Story of Courage;" and projects at the Ashintully Gardens.

Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative

CITI - the Commonwealth's Information Technology Initiative - is a public/private partnership to promote IT education through strategic investments that prepares graduates to participate, lead and innovate in the knowledge-based economy of Massachusetts. Launched in 2000, CITI brings together K-12, community colleges, public universities and industry to promote IT education across the curriculum and respond to technology workforce needs.

Making Memories Matter

The project, an initiative of the Public History program, developed and offered a series of programs at area senior centers in which participants had hands-on encounters with artifacts from area museums, in guided presentations led by public historians. The program combined artifacts, lectures, and discussions to extend museum services to older adults unable to travel to museums, while also enriching the lives of elderly participants by providing opportunities to relate personal experiences to the changes in society and technology that they had witnessed over the course of their lives.

History Institute

Since 1994, the UMass Amherst History Department has hosted events, workshops and in-service trainings for K-12 teachers in Western Massachusetts. The Department’s signature offering is “The History Institute”. A joint endeavor with the Collaborative for Educational Services in Northampton, Massachusetts, The History Institute is an annual series of workshops organized around a central theme. At each workshop, a faculty member presents on a specific historical topic. Following the lecture, teachers and scholars work together to develop strategies for applying the content to the classroom.
