Body Politics takes on issues faced by women of color

Body Politics, an award-winning theater production by and about women of color, was be presented on four Five College campuses this October.

Early each fall, the Women of Color Leadership Network (WOCLN) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst solicits applications from women of color throughout the Five College community to participate in Body Politics, a two-semester course that involves sharing personal stories through creative writing, movement and dance, culminating with a stage performance.

The results are intense, moving presentations by the participants exploring issues that range from hair texture, skin color and self-esteem to sexuality, cultural identity and violence. For the participants, Body Politics is far more than a stage performance. “It’s amazing the positive transformation we see happening with these women,” says Hind Mari, director of WOCLN.

The Women of Color Leadership Network (WOCLN) celebrates and supports the accomplishments and endeavors of Black/African American, African, Latina, South American, Chicana, Asian-Pacific Islander, South Asian, Native American, Middle Eastern, Arab/Arab American, Caribbean, Biracial and Multiracial, and all Indigenous women in the Five College region of Western Massachusetts.

WOCLN is ...

  • a place where you can learn as well as teach - from peers and elders alike.
  • a place where women of color are acknowledged for everything they embody.
  • a place for self-expression.
  • a place where standards and expectations are set toward your greatest potential.
  • a place where we're looking for the best that you've got.
  • a place where your skills are continually redefined and shaped to support you in reaching your highest potential.
  • a place to find friendship and connection.
  • a place that asks you to open your mind to new ideas, stretch your limits, and contribute what you can and what you know.
