WMWP AlumsParticipating in the Western Massachusetts Writing Project Summer Institute is not a one-shot professional development experience. Summer Institute alums join the growing network of WMWP teacher-consultants, who are among the most active and effective teacher-leaders in the region. There are many ways that you can stay involved after your Summer Institute "initiation" into WMWP. One of the best ways is to be an active participant in some of WMWP's numerous programs for teachers and eventually take on a leadership role in one or more of them. These programs include teachers as writers groups and retreats, conferences and workshops, student writing programs, and summer institutes. Come often--and bring your colleagues! We count on you to spread the word about WMWP. A program especially designed to extend the work you did in the Summer Institute is the Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing. This 15-credit program includes a required course, Writing and the Teaching of Writing, and several electives. Another important way to expand your role as a WMWP teacher-consultant is to lead school-based in-service workshops and study groups. You can do this kind of work in your own school or district--and WMWP would be glad to help--or you might be asked to provide contracted services through WMWP's professional development program. If you are interested in being a workshop provider, please contact Professional Devlopment Coordinator Susan Biggs. WMWP is part of Massachusetts network, a New England network, and a national network of National Writing Project sites. All of these networks offer opportunities to get involved in the Writing Project "movement" beyond the local level, and the National Writing Project provides mini-grants for a variety of special projects. WMWP already has NWP-sponsored initiatives in reading, technology, and working with English Language Learners. If you have an idea for a new initiative, please let us know! We value your ideas, your expertise, and your commitment. Please stay in touch. Let us know about your accomplishments, your frustrations, your suggestions, and your questions. Write an article for our print newsletter, Connections, or post an entry on our weblog, WMWP Online Newsletter. Drop us a line at wmwp@english.umass.edu or give us a call at 413-545-5466. Remember: you are the Western Massachusetts Writing Project. Read Astrid Linstrom's poem "Thought Wisps" inspired by the WMWP logo. |
