Open to all K-college teachers, the writing-and-response group provides time for writing and response in a relaxed setting. The sessions are led by Maryann Jennings and Sherril Willis. Free. No registration required. Click here for more information.

WMWP’s SummerWrite! Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is a one-week in-depth writing experience for middle school students entering grades 6, 7 and 8. The Institute provides an opportunity for students to explore a variety of genres, experiment with new forms of writing, and learn from each other and from guest writers. Cost: $350. Writing and Teaching Writing (Eng. 712)
Monday-Thursday, June 30-July 3, July 7-10, July 21-24, 9 a.m.-12. UMass Amherst.
This 3-credit course taught by Bruce Penniman will focus on theoretical and practical questions related to the writing process and the challenges of teaching writing. Its aim is to provide participants the opportunity to reflect on their own literacy learning and teaching experiences, explore composition theory and research, and examine current issues in the teaching of writing. Fulfills a core requirement for the Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing but open to all. Tuition and fees $420. Register at www.umassulearn.net.
Invitational Summer Institute (Eng. 591 AA, B)

An intensive program on writing and the teaching of writing. Includes time for personal writing and response, individual research, and sharing of best practices. Participants become teacher-consultants in the WMWP network. 120 PDPs. 6 credits. $800 stipend (payable in summer and school-year installments). Rolling admissions begin October 1, 2007. Teachers as Writers 11 with Leslea Newman (Eng. 591C)
Monday-Friday, July 28-August 1, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. UMass Amherst.
Teachers as Writers builds on the premise that the greatest benefit to teachers comes not so much from talking about teaching as from working on our own writing and our own identity as writers. Led by noted author Leslea Newman, the group will write together in the morning, generating material, break for private writing time mid-day, and reconvene in the afternoon for sharing and responding. Your registration will be complete when you send in a check for $150, made payable to the University of Massachusetts. Limit: 20. 30 PDPs. Register online.
Workshop on African American Dialect and Implications for Educators
Wednesday-Friday, July 9-11.
Three-day workshop on the description of linguistic patterns in African American English, dialects used by some African Americans, and implications for teaching mainstream/classroom English. Registration information, dates, and program to be announced at http://www.umass.edu/csaal/.
Professional Writing Retreat
Tuesday-Thursday, August 5-7.
This three day writing retreat will give participants the opportunity to work on writing projects for publication, in such venues as professional journals, newsletters, newspapers, and on-line venues. Come to write, share work in progress, and receive feedback. The coaches are to former WMWP site directors, Charlie Moran and Bruce Penniman. Enrollment is limited to 16 people.
