Teacher Inquiry Groups


Each year WMWP engages in a year-long inquiry into an important issue in education.  In 2010-2011, we explored the topic of Language Diversity.  In 2011-2012, our site will explore the topic of Language Diversity in the Common Core Standards

WMWP also supports ongoing Teacher Inquiry Groups. 


Summer Institute Inquiry Group (SIIG)

This teacher inquiry group explores ways to inform the Invitational Summer Institute in the areas of relevance, diversity and access.  In the past, our research and learning has informed the recruitment and application process, the choice of readings, and the development of a special 2 week Summer Institute to meet the needs of graduates of our ELL Leadership Institutes.  If you are interested in joining this group for the 2011-2012 school year, contact Joanne Wisniewski.


Mentor & Leadership Inquiry Group

This teacher inquiry group explores ways to support and develop new and ongoing teacher leadership within the Western Massachusetts Writing Project and in our teachers' school communities.  If you are interested in joining this group for the 2011-2012 school year, contact Jane Baer-Leighton.


Language Diversity Inquiry Group

Lisa Greene, from the Center the Study of African American Language (CSAAL), Denise Ives, from the Language, Literacy and Culture department at UMass Amherst School of Education, Anne Herrington of the UMass Amherst Composition and Rhetoric department co-facilitated an inquiry group on the topic of Language Diversity exploring African-American English, English Language Learners and code-switching.
