Invitational Summer Institute Application

This four-week program for K-16 teachers focuses on writing and the teaching of writing. Tuesday-Friday, July 6-30, 2010, 8:30-4:00. Orientation Day: June 5, 8:30-3. UMass.120 PDPs and 6 credits. Limit 16. Applications now being accepted. Stipend $800 (payable in summer and school-year installments).

Application
Please include a cover sheet that gives us this information: your name, home address, telephone, and e-mail address; your school and school address, and the subjects and grade-levels that you teach. Include this cover sheet with the materials in your written application, described below.

Step 1: Written Application
Please write your responses to items A, B, and C below on a separate sheet and attach this writing and the documents we ask for in D and E to the cover sheet described above.

A. Describe a way you use writing in your teaching that you would like to explore further and be willing to share with other institute participants (1 page limit).
B. Describe your interests and experience with writing (1 page limit).
C. Describe a teaching/learning issue in your classroom or school that you would like to explore through professional reading and classroom investigation (1 page limit).
D. Include a letter from a colleague such as a department head, teacher or principal describing your teaching assignment and contributions to the school.
E. Include a brief resume that reflects your experience as an educator.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-admissions basis, so apply early!

Step 2: Group Informational Session
Applicants who satisfactorily complete Step 1 must attend a group meeting in Spring 2010. This 1 1/2 hour "getting-to-know-you" session will be used to clarify the expectations of the summer institute and will include a writing activity and informal small-group discussions of writing and the teaching of writing.
