This four-week program for K-16 teachers focuses on writing and the teaching of writing. Monday-Thursday, July 7-31, 2008, 8:30-4. Orientation Day: June 7, 8:30-2. UMass.120 PDPs and 6 credits. Limit 16. Applications now being accepted. Stipend $800 (payable in summer and school-year installments).
Application
Please include a cover sheet that gives us this information: your name, home address, telephone, and e-mail address; your school and school address, and the subjects and grade-levels that you teach. Include this cover sheet with the materials in your written application, described below.
Step 1: Written Application
Please write your responses to A, B, and C below on a separate sheet and attach this writing and the documents we ask for in D and E to the cover sheet described above.
A. Describe a technique for teaching writing or using writing as a learning tool that you would be willing to share with the institute participants (1 page limit).
B. Describe your interests and experience as a writer (1 page limit).
C. Describe a teaching and learning issue in your classroom or school that you would like to explore by reading professional literature and through classroom investigation (1 page limit).
D. Include a letter from your principal or superintendent describing your teaching assignment and contributions to the school.
E. Include a brief resume, one that includes your experience as a teacher of writing and, if applicable, your experience as a teacher-consultant or writer.

Step 2: Group Inverview
Applicants who complete Step 1 satisfactorily will be invited to a group interview in late winter or early spring. This "getting-to-know-you" session will be used to clarify the expectations of the summer institute and will include a writing activity and informal small-group discussions of writing and the teaching of writing.
