Maxims for the Art of Reading

  • We use the word "reading" for a variety of activities that may, in fact, be quite different from each other.
  • What "reading" is in a given situation or context depends on the social, material and cultural conditions through which it is practiced.
  • Reading is always done for a purprose and is always part of a larger practice and thus, it is an activity of a community of practice.
  • An individual's "reading ability" or "skill" is unstable (because of 1-3).
  • Reading differs from context to context, and therefore, we are always learning to read.
