The mission of the Workplace Learning and Development unit is to promote and support employee and organizational growth, development, and empowerment by providing innovative, high-quality workplace programs, resources, and services.

We strive to improve the quality of work life by enhancing individual and organizational effectiveness, performance, and transformation.  We foster, educate for, and celebrate community, diversity, and social justice and work to develop effective collaborative partnerships both on and off campus.
   
  Meet the Staff of Workplace Learning and Development
 
The staff in Workplace Learning and Development has a combined total of over 100 years of training and organizational services in higher education and over 40 years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. We provide a unique and specialized understanding of the challenges and struggles of working in a large public research university. We are familiar with the internal systems, structures, resources, policies and procedures of the institution which allows us to work effectively with all client organizations. As members of the UMass community, we also bring a commitment to the success and achievements of the school.
   
   
 
Linda S. Marchesani, Ed.D. Manager
 

Linda has an extensive background in higher education, with over 25 years of experience in staff and organizational development, human relations and social justice education. She has led Workplace Learning and Development since 1994.

Her professional commitments include: multicultural organizational development; management and supervisory leadership development: performance management and the recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce. She has consulted and written widely on issues of diversity and social justice related to faculty development, curriculum innovation and multicultural organizational development. Linda and Dr. Bailey Jackson recently published a chapter on Transforming Higher Education Institutions Using Multicultural Organizational Development: A Case Study of a Large Northeastern University (in Teaching Inclusively: Ouellett, 2005).

Linda has an Ed.D in Education from the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is an adjunct faculty member of the Social Justice Education Program.

Her community contributions include: the Board of Directors, Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts, a social change philanthropic organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in western Massachusetts.

   
 
Margaret Arsenault, Employee & Organizational Development Specialist
 

Margaret has extensive experience in the design and facilitation of workshops and seminars for public sector employees and organizations, with particular emphasis on: supervisory leadership development, diversity issues, teambuilding, organizational skills, and customer service. She has a strong organizational development background in strategic planning, facilitated retreats, organizational problem-solving, and developmental coaching of supervisors and managers.  In 1985, Margaret began her career at UMass in Student Affairs as an advisor, eventually heading the University’s Student Leadership Program. Margaret joined Workplace Learning and Development in 1998.

Margaret has been a lecturer in the School of Education, and is currently an instructor in the Dean’s Book course, Commonwealth College.

Margaret has a M.Ed. in Organizational Development.  She is certified in mediation and quality tools training.

Margaret’s community work includes participation in volunteer efforts to rebuild New Orleans, following Hurricane Katrina.

 
 
Vanessa Kehler, Office Manager
 
Vanessa Kehler is a graduate of UMass and has been a campus employee since 1987. She is a believer in life-long learning, and is in constant pursuit of new ideas and experiences.
 
Day , Danette
 

Danette Day is a fourth year doctoral student at UMASS in the School of Education’s Teacher Education and School Improvement (TESI) program.  Danette has twenty-two years of professional experience as an educator and educational administrator in public, private and charter secondary schools. Her education includes a Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Simmons College, Master’s of Education in Instructional Technology from Lesley University, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Educational Leadership and Management from Fitchburg University. When not formally engaged in learning, Danette spends time with family and friends, travels, and practices yoga.

Colleen Smith is a first year doctoral student at UMASS in the Educational Research, Policy, and Administration program with a concentration in higher education. Colleen's education includes a Master of Science degree in College Student Personnel Administration from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY and a
Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY. Prior to coming to UMASS, Colleen worked at MassArt in Boston, MA and St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. When Colleen has spare time, she enjoys live music, being outdoors, crocheting, and dancing.

Gerardo was born and raised in Mexico where he first became aware of his many identities and their implications in society. Interested in continuing to grow as an educator, he moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies in Higher Education. Gerardo enjoys working with college students in the residence halls, and is interested in organizational theory, social justice, and student development from and international higher education perspective.

Jo-Ann is the Associate Director at the Univerity's department of Equal Opportunity and Diversity.

 
 
Bunce, Janet
 

Ms. Bunce is the President of Care for our Elders, which she established in response to the dramatic growth in the field of eldercare. She specializes in communication skills, and teaching home care professionals, retirement community management personnel, family members and elders. Her work is focused on assisting elderly clients and their families manage and enhance the in-home health care environment. She believes effective communication is essential to the physical and emotional well-being of both the caregiver and the receiver of care.

Ms. Bunce received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Vermont in 1977, a Masters of Science degree from Ohio State University in 1991 and a Certificate in Gerontology from Westfield State College in 2005.

 
   
Burbank, Jason
 

Jason received his Masters degree in mechanical engineering at UMass in 1980. A registered engineer in Massachusetts he has been working since 1985 at the Physical Plant in areas of HVAC design and energy conservation. He’s often involved in addressing building operational problems, and has designed many of the controls presently in use. He was intimately involved in the scope and design of our recent energy performance contract on campus.

 
   
Caffery, Glen
 

Glen has been working on campus for 23 years in a variety of roles including support staff, lecturer, academic program chair, advisor, and, as of this semester, student. He is in the Department of Resource Economics.

 
   
Campbell, Elisa
 

Elisa Campbell was a full-time employee of OIT for more than 20 years. During that time, she taught workshops in many subjects for OIT. Most of the workshops have been about Microsoft Word, but she has also taught Groupwise and various email packages as well as assisting with the Excel workshop. She is now retired and working part-time in the Software Support area of OIT.

 
   
Castanza, Jodie
 

Jodie Castanza serves as the Assistant Director for Residence Life. Her work focuses on recruitment, selection, training, and ongoing development of all the student, graduate, and full time staff in Residence Life. Jodie has been engaged in intergroup dialogue facilitation and participation since 1999, while working at the University of Michigan. odie and her family share a deep commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society.

Tim is the Manager of Human Resources Administration here at UMass.

 
   
Chayes, Benjamin
 

Ben has a BA from Framingham State University and M.Ed from UMass. A registered securities representative, Ben has worked in financial services for over twenty years educating people about personal finance, real estate lending, insurance, and annuities. In his current position as a retirement education specialist, Ben works exclusively with Massachusetts state and municipal employees to ensure that they make informed decisions about saving for a secure retirement.

 
   
Clayton-Jones, Kate
 

Kate is an Emergency Preparedness Consultant and an adjunct professor at Greenfield Community College where she teaches Financial Literacy. An entrepreneur who has owned businesses in several different arenas, Kate brings life experience enthusiasm and a "no problems just solutions to be found" attitude to her teachings.

 
   
Collings Vann, Amanda
 

Amanda has worked in The Center for Health Promotion at the University of Massachusetts Amherst since 1999. A graduate of UMass, she holds a master's degree in Community and University-based Health Education from Pennsylvania State University. Her areas of specialty are sexuality and women's health education. Amanda is committed to ending cycles of violence in society, and to providing accurate information that empowers students to make decisions about their sexual health.

 
 
Collins, Christine
 

Christine joined the University in September 2008 in the Office of General Counsel at UMass Amherst and holds the position of Associate Counsel.  She obtained her B.A. from Trinity College in Hartford, CT and her J.D. from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  Prior to joining UMass, she was a partner at the law firm of Bowditch & Dewey, LLP in Worcester, MA in the Labor and Employment and Higher Education groups and previously served as a clerk to the Justices of the Superior Court of Massachusetts.

Oscar is currently working in the Athletics Department as the Learning Specialist in Academic Support Services. He has worked at UMass since 1997 and has had the opportunity to co-facilitate an Intergroup Dialogue Course fo Dr. Zuniga.

 
   
Cooks, Leda
 

Leda is a faculty member in the Department of Communication at the University of MA, Amherst. Her interests in the possibilities of dialogue stem from her experience as a mediator and from a background studying the dynamics of conflict and cultural and social identities. She is currently working on a campus and community dialogue project focused on racial identity and whiteness.

Shara is the Manager of Human Resources at the University of Massachusetts Physical Plant Department.

Carey Dimmitt is the Associate Director of the Center for School Counseling Outcome Research, an Assistant Professor of School Counseling, and the Clinical Director of the School Counseling Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from UMass-Amherst.

Jennifer is the Associate Director for Grants and Contracts at the UMass Grants and Contracts Administration.

ary Duggan has been the Travel Card Manager for the Amherst Campus for the past year. Before he came to the Univeristy, Gary worked for the Ahlstrom and Dexter Corporations and Spaulding.

Ruth Ever, M.P.H, Assistant Director of Center for Health Promotion, UMass Ruth has over 25 years of experience in the field of public health, and has worked on numerous issues including women's health, tobacco prevention, and bullying prevention, as an advocate, community organizer, evaluator and educator.

Katja Hahn d’Errico holds Adjunct Faculty status in the School of Education, Social Justice Program, where she teaches graduate courses and is the lead faculty for the IMPACT program for the Community Engagement Program at UMass Amherst, along with being faculty for the Citizen’s Scholar Program in Commonwealth Honors College.

Linda joined the University of Massachusetts Amherst Division of Human Resources in December of 2007 and is working as a Total Compensation Assistant. She has a Bachelors Degree in Finance from Illinois State University. Before joining the University in 2007 Linda worked in the Human Resources Department of the UMassFIVE College Federal Credit Union in Hadley, MA.

I completed my M.A. from Eastern Illinois University in 2007 and worked at Eastern Illinois University Counseling Center from 2007-2010. I'm a licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). I joined UMass Center for Counseling and Psychological Health in September 2010, and am the Suicide Prevention Outreach Specialist on the Garrett Lee Smith Suicide Prevention Grant. I plan on pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology in the near future.

Joseph Krupczynski, Associate Professor, is an interior and architectural designer, artist and educator. He is the principal of "studio projects", an interdisciplinary design studio focusing on the links between design, culture and art, through public and private design commissions, installations, activism, and research.

 
   
Laford, Robert
 

Bob is Safety Services Manager with Environmental Health and Safety.  He is involved with campus safety initiatives, occupational injury management, employee safety training, and emergency planning and response for the University.  He is a member of the campus hazardous materials response team.

Bob has been active in municipal emergency service for thirty years, holding a number of positions ranging from firefighter and EMT, to fire instructor, fire officer, and chief officer. He has also served as an instructor with the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy and Mt. Washusett Community College.

Bob is author of the text Planning and Practice – A Guide for Emergency Planning and Operations, as well as author of a number of articles in Responder Magazine, Fire Chief Magazine, The Voice, Fire Station Management Advisor, and Occupational Health and Safety Magazine.

Genti is a full-time employee for the Help Desk in OIT and supports various operating systems, software, and network connectivity. Genti obtained his M.S. degree from UMass Amherst.

Angela Lussier is an award-winning speaker, author of the Seth Godin recommended book The Anti-Resume Revolution, associate director of alumni career programs at the Umass Amherst Alumni Association, and owner of 365 Degrees Consulting in Springfield, MA. Her advice can be found on Yahoo!, NBC, ABC, The Ladders, Virgin.com, About.com, and in many career and business books. Ms Lussier holds a BA in Communications from UMass Amherst. Speaking engagements and clients include TEDx, Boeing, MassMutual, Comcast, Westfield State University, and many others. She was once reprimanded for being "too creative" and is on a mission to help others to stop waiting and start creating a career by design like she did.

Barbara Madeloni is a senior lecturer at the School of Education, where she coordinates, advises, and teaches within the secondary teacher education program.

 
   
Mari, Hind
 

Hind has a doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her areas of expertise and interests include the intersection of social identities as well as all other social justice issues, cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution, and leadership training. She has presented on these topics both locally and nationally. Hind is the Director of the Women of Color Leadership Network (WOCLN) at UMass Amherst, a nationally recognized program which honors and strengthens the voices and experiences of under-represented women.

 
   
Marshall, Nicholas
 
Nick is the Employee Labor Relations Administrator for the university. For the past 10 years he was an arbitrator/mediator at the Western Massachusetts Board of Conciliation and Arbitration. He has practiced law in Westfield, Massachusetts, specializing in the areas of labor, employment, and municipal law.

John is the Director of Procurement here at UMass.

 
   
Martineau, Sarah
 

Sarah Martineau's connection to the UMass community dates back to September 1999, when she entered the University as a First Year student in the Class of 2003. As a student, she worked at the WEB DuBois Library, earning both her work-study award and her bachelor's degree in French and Francophone Studies. Since 2007, Sarah has worked as Administrative Assistant for the Community Engagement Program at Commonwealth Honors College where she serves as secretary of the Honors CDSJ Commitee. Sarah has been taking courses in the Social Justice Eduacation department since 2009 and is interested in the relationship between social justice and service-learning, focusing specifically on the impact of class on college retention and attrition. In her free time, Sarah can be found snuggling her two cats, pitching horseshoes, or challenging her friends and family to an intense game of Scrabble.

Nicholas is an associate professor, earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1976, and a master’s degree from the School of Journalism at Columbia University in 1986. He also holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard University (1990). He has been a reporter for the Springfield Daily News, Washington Post, Afro-American, and Christian Science Monitor ( Washington bureau). McBride’s courses include newswriting, the philosophy of journalism, community journalism, and covering race.

Kris is an Employee Service Specialist with the Human Resources Department. She has been in the department since 2006 and has been at the University since 2002. She handles Unemployment claims, helps employees at the Employee Service Center and facilitates New Employee Orientations for newly benefitted employees.

Julia is a Staff Psychologist at University of Massachusetts Mental Health Services.

 
   
Ozer, Alison
 
Alison has been a professional dancer and licensed Massage and Shiatsu therapist. She has taught at major corporations and colleges around New York City and in Massachusetts, and at the New England American Massage Therapy Conferences. As a member of the Development Office she is well aware of the typical tensions that accumulate from work stress and has creative approaches to address them.
 
   
Peters, Madeline
 

Dr. Madeline L. Peters, is the Director of Disability Services at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has worked in the Field of Disability for 20 + years and in Student Affairs for 17 years.  She has taught classes in Social Justice Education and a range of social justice issues, has presented her work at national conferences, and has facilitated workshops on disability, diversity and social justice.. Dr.  Peters is also the co-editor of Reading for Diversity and Social Justice, in which she edited the chapter on Ableism.

 
   
Pinn, Jacqueline
 

Jacqueline is currently the Director of the Office of Programs and Services for ALANA Students (OPSAS), a unit of the Center for Student Development. OPSAS provides academic support, cultural enrichment and student development as well as supports institutional diversity efforts. Ms. Pinn has been on-campus since 1997, where she previously worked at Everywoman's Center directing the Women of Color Leadership Network.

Michael is a Police Sergeant with the University of Massachusetts Amherst Public Safety Department.

 
   
Rougeaux Shabazz, Demetria
 

Demetria, Assistant Professor (Ph.D. University of Alabama), teaches in the Department of Communication at University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She looks at the role of identity construction within popular culture and has authored “Birth Through Conflict: TV Responds to the Politics of Race in 1968,” and “Wilson ‘Boozoo’ Anthony Chavis: Zydeco Musician.” She specializes in media and cultural criticism, examining the role of identity construction within media especially in terms of socio-economic class, gender, and race. She is currently working on a manuscript that looks at the politics of production in the 1960s TV sitcom series Julia.

 
   
Schiff, Tom
 

Tom is a health educator at the Center for Health Promotion in University Health Services and an adjunct faculty member in the Social Justice Education program. His work primarily focuses on men’s health, violence prevention, outreach to international and ALANA students, tobacco education and cessation, and student leadership development. He also is a certified whitewater kayaking instructor and avid backcountry skier.

 
   
Scott, Tim
 
Tim Scott, MSW, LICSW, is the Interim Director for the Faculty & Staff Assistance Program at UMass, Amherst. In addition to being a mental health provider, Tim has an extensive history as a social justice organizer and is currently working on a PhD in Community Health Education with a minor in Social Justice Education.
 
   
Skelly, Kevin
 

Kevin is the manager of Software Support in OIT. He has presented several different workshops for UMass staff through OIT in the use of computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, Dreamweaver, FileMaker Pro, and Secure Computing.

 
   
Vight, Jeremy
 

Jeremy Vight has been working for OIT for many years, first as a student and then as a full-time employee. He has a degree in Computer Engineering, and he specializes in copyright law and procedures here at UMass Amherst.

 
   
Wittshirk, Karen
 

Karen Wittshirk has been the Campus Center Events office Scheduling Coordinator for about 10 years. Previous work experience includes teaching, being Executive Director of the Hampshire County Housing Authority and Town Tax Collector. She has held a variety of town positions both elected and appointed. She is currently the Chair of the town Library Trustees.
