Organizational Services
What type of Organizational Services do you provide?
WL&D provides a wide range of services to enhance the performance and effectiveness of individulas, work groups and organizations. Examples of services we provide to University departments include: stratigec ploanning, needs assessment, respectful workplace design, work style management, work team design, effective meeting stategies, role clarification, supervisory coaching and development, communication improvement and conflict resolution / mediation services.
Who are the consultants that provide the organizational services?
The consultants in Workplace Learning and Development have a combined total of over 100 years of training and organizational services in higher education and over 40 years at UMass. We provide an unmatched understanding of the challenges and struggles of working in a large public Research University. our familiarity with the Universities internal systems, structures, resources, policies and procedures makes us uniquely qualified to work successfully with our various client organizations. As members of the UMass community we bring a shared commitment to the success and achievements of the institution.  On occasion, WL&D will engage external consultants, who also have a background in higher education, to provide services for our clients.
Is there any charge for these services?
Organizational assessment and initial supervisory consults are provided to University departments free of charge. Other services such as customized workshops, mediation, and retreat facilitation do carry charges which are significantly discounted for University departments. When meetings, trainings, or retreats require travel outside of the Amherst area, departments will be asked to pay the travel expenses of the WL&D staff.
How much input does our department have in the planning process?
Members of our staff work collaboratively with the departments we serve. Because our services are customized, the input of your department is vital to all planning and interventions.  Typically, when providing customized workshops, the customized curriculum is provided in advance to the department representative(s) for approval.
Who can request services?
OD Consulting services can be requested by any University employee. While most requests are initiated by a department manager or supervisor, we will respond to all requests we receive. If a person requesting services is not the supervisor, we will work with the staff member to strategize an effective way to help the employee bring WL&D resources to the department or to help the employee access other campus resources for assistance.
CUSTOMIZED WORKSHOPS
What do you charge for customized workshops?
The cost of customized workshops varies depending on the topic, the level of curriculum customization requested, and the size of your organization. Generally speaking we do not charge for planning or curriculum development time if the topic is something we offer regularly. Service charges generally do apply for facilitation time and are based on the number of facilitators.
How far in advance do I need to contact you?
If you are planning for a specific date or need a highly specialized topic it is helpful to contact us four to six weeks in advance to insure that a consultant is available and sufficient planning time is allowed. However, topics offered regularly, such as those in our catalogue, may be delivered on shorter notice depending on scheduling availability.
What if I’m not sure what workshop I need but I know I need something?
This is the ideal time for a supervisory consultation. A member of our staff will meet with you and ask a series of questions to assist you in determining what type of intervention might be most appropriate to your circumstances.
STRATEGIC PLANNING
What is strategic planning?
Strategic Planning is a process of identifying desired long term organizational goals and developing plans to reach those identified goals.
I’ve done this before and the strategic plan just got buried, what’s different now?
The current pace of transformation of organizations has significantly changed the strategic planning process. While most organizations use five and ten year planning models in the past, today most organizations creat and operate on two or three year plans. This allows the greater flexibility to quickly adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
MEETING FACILITATION
Why would I want someone else to run my meeting?
People ask us to assist meeting facilitations for a variety of reasons: the person responsible for running the meeting may want to be able to participate fully in the meeting and not worry about keeping the agenda on time; or the person expected to run the meeting has had some difficulties facilitating previous meetings. Our consultants can provide tools, processes and best practices for a meeting to help you to be more effective in achieving your meeting goals and our consultants can often serve as a neutral facilitating party for a group dealing with stressful issues or conflict .
