Worcester Area Trial For Counseling In Hyperlipidemia (Watch)-

WATCH was a randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the effects of: 1) a nutrition intervention training program for primary care internists; and 2) a structured office practice environment for nutrition management on eating patterns (i.e. reduction of calories from saturated fat) and serum cholesterol of patients of both sexes in the upper quartile of the cholesterol distribution enrolled in the Fallon Clinic. The effectiveness of the interventions were evaluated by a randomized controlled design in which 1500 patients were allocated by site to one of three conditions: 1) control; 2) physician nutrition counseling training; and 3) physician nutrition counseling training plus a structured office environment for nutrition management. Twelve sites were randomized to the three conditions, and over forty physicians were trained in techniques for dietary intervention. Since this study follows upon the Watch study, a much more extensive discussion is given.
