UPDATE:  The mystery of which edition to use for the Beethoven Notturno is about to come to a close.  Here is some info. for Monique:

  1. There are two editions available - Schott and Schirmer.
  2. The original and unavailable edition was edited by Kleinheinz but is very close to the Schott edition.  Beethoven actually wasn't pleased that this piece was arranged and set to be published without his permission, but he apparently did make some alterations to the original version and begrudgingly allowed it to be published with his sanction.
  3. The Schott edition is more authentic and was the preferred edition of William Primrose.
  4. The Schirmer edition is edited by Sydney Beck.  Beck argues that Beethoven did not adapt the trio Serenade himself and so his revision gives the viola a bit more meat.
