UMass Dairy Judging Team
In 2002, we competed at the Big E and placed 3rd as a team for judging
milking shorthorns and one of our members placed 6th overall for milking
shorthorns. We look forward to going back to the Big E next year. For more information, contact: NESA Intercollegiate Judging Competition
Students within the department have the opportunity to participate
in the Northeast Student Affiliate Division of the American Dairy Science
Association and the American Society of Animal Science Collegiate Competition
(NESA), which occurs each year in mid February. Preparations begin early
in the fall semester for this popular event. The competition is a combination
of judging various classes of livestock (with one “surprise”
class), a quiz bowl, and oral presentations. The results (both individual
and team) are announced that evening at the much anticipated awards
banquet. While this is a “competition”, the emphasis is
on meeting students and faculty from other schools all while having
fun. |

The
dairy judging team gives students a unique opportunity to judge one
species of livestock. They judge all six breeds of dairy cattle usually
with 2 age groups in each breed. The students judge the class to the
best of their ability. When judging, the three main areas that one concentrates
on are dairy cattle body conformation, dairy character and mammary development.
Each breed has its own description and ideal conformation. The students
also have to give oral reasons for two of the classes.
