Belted Galloway Group

Our foundation stock traveled from Aldermere Farm in Maine to UMass in March 2003. The Belted Galloway Group was started by a group of interested students during the spring semester of 2004. The group is student run and overseen by a faculty advisor. Through the UMass Belted Galloway group, members learn beef cattle management techniques and participate in all aspects of herd management, from vaccinations and halter breaking to embryo transfer and calving. Students also have the option of fitting and showing the cattle at various beef shows. The shows are an excellent way of meeting people in the beef cattle industry.

The UMass Belted Galloway Group’s goal is to teach students about beef cattle management and allow students to gain experience working in direct contact with the cattle. This includes making management decisions involving sales, breeding and nutrition. The Belted Galloway group can be taken for credit and is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with beef cattle.
