UMass Amherst: Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences
Hadley Farm Equine Center

The Hadley Farm Equine Center employs about 240 hours a week of student labor. We have numerous shifts, throughout the weekdays and weekends, for students to fit working into their academic schedule.
The Hadley Farm also has the Manor House on the property which allows two to three students a place to live on the farm. This provides the farm constant surveillance by employees.
The student crew is responsible for the daily feeding and cleaning of the barn. Turn out of the stabled horses, and assisting the farm farrier and local veterinarian are also expectations.
There are numerous opportunities for students at the Hadley Farm. There are working internships where students can focus on a specific aspect of farm management, be it budgetary, pasture management, or equine health care for example. Students are assigned supervisory duties for personnel management experience, and to develop effective communication skills. Students in the crew develop a strong sense of responsibility and pride, due to the tremendous expectations of running a large farm, and taking total care of a dependant herd of horses.
If interested in working at the Hadley Farm, it is best that you begin communicating with the farm manager as soon as you know your schedule. Fill out the application and email it to sbruns@vasci.umass.edu.
If you can apply for federal work study money, it is important that you know how much money is allotted to you for work study funding, and that you apply early. It is requested that we hire work study students prior to hiring hourly. Finally, experience with horses is appreciated, but we will train an inexperienced student. We look forward to seeing you on the farm!
