Welcome, Vet & Animal Sciences Alums!

We are gauging the interest of BS, MS and PhD graduates from our department in forming a Veterinary and Animal Sciences Alumni Association. The purpose of the association would be to facilitate contact among our graduates, to help us to keep track of our graduates and to help our graduates contribute to on-going programs in the department including fund raising for farm maintenance, student scholarships and research.

From the Farms

Plans for expanding the Livestock Studies Program continues on track with the pending installation of a 38 x 58 foot fabric "Greenhouse" structure just north of the Livestock Center at the Hadley Farm. This barn will be primarily used to house the Student Run Goat Herd thereby easing housing pressure in the main facility. We hope to be in the new barn later this fall.

Purchase last spring of several gated panels that incorporates a section of locking head gates, makes catching cows out on pasture for research and management purposes a relatively simple task. The whole catch-pen can be easily moved to where ever it is needed. The permanent installation of an additional section of head gates in the fence line of the south pasture up in South Deerfield eases cattle handling tasks for research, breeding, vet checks, and management procedures.

Our small herd of Belted Galloways ("Belties") are doing well up at the South Deerfield Facility. Our first new arrival "Fiona" was born June 5th and weighed 69 pounds.

We have purchased a ram and two bucks for the breeding program. All three animals exhibit excellent conformation and possess highly desirable carcass characteristics. These genetics should help us to improve the quality of conformation in the respective species, allow us to be competitive in the show ring, and increase the value of any breeding stock that we sell.
