UWW Natural Science Courses

Boude Moore

"The most exciting thing about UWW is the variety of people in our courses, the lives they’ve chosen, and that we all want to continue our education, to redirect our lives and that provides enlightenment to where we are going in our lives and careers."

—Boude Moore

UWW provides the two natural science courses that satisfy the UMass Amherst general education natural science requirement. The classes meet at times convenient for adult learners and are held once a week on either a weekday evening or on a Saturday morning.

UWW 222 Introduction to Body and Brain
Primarily for non-science students, this course introduces the student to human anatomy and physiology, including some new insights into the workings of the human brain. The course is an overview of the function and structure of the major body systems—nervous, muscular, skeletal, circulatory, digestive, etc.—including new discoveries about the role that cellular and chemical changes in the brain play in memory, emotion and mental illness. The course fulfills a Biological Science (BS) general education requirement and is open to all students.

UWW 240 Introduction to Ecology
This course introduces the student to ecological principles that help to explain how natural communities function. Key topics include populations, community structure, earth's biomes (deserts, grasslands, temperate and tropical forests, etc.), human attitudes toward nature, and prospects for conservation. Several nature films are shown and at least one field trip is held towards the end of the semester. The course fulfills a Biological Science (BS) general education requirement and is open to all students.
