An individualized UWW degree allows for more flexibility in transferring previous college credits. Most courses that are completed with a C- or higher from accredited colleges will be transferrable. Some kinds of courses not normally accepted by UMass Amherst-such as vocationally oriented courses, internships, or unaccredited certificate programs—can be transferred once they have been approved as part of a UWW degree plan. UMass Amherst does not limit transfer courses based on the dates when they were taken, so many courses completed long ago will still transfer.

Here are the important dates to keep in mind when applying for admission to the University Without Walls and financial aid from the University of Massachusetts Amherst:

UWW Application Deadlines

• Fall 2009 semester application is May 15
• Spring 2010 semester application is October 1

The UWW application deadline indicates the date when all materials must be received by the University Without Walls.  Minimum admissions requirements are: 12 credits of college course work (a composition course is strongly recommended) and a 2.0 grade point average. To be considered complete, all UMass Amherst University Without Walls applications must include:

• Signed, dated and completed UMass Amherst application form
• Official transcripts from any and all colleges ever attended
•  Résumé documenting training and work history
• A personal statement essay of 2 to 3 pages
• $50 application fee—payable only by check or money order (cash not accepted)
• Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended at any time (sent separately by the institution or submitted in original sealed envelope). Applicants raised in a non-English speaking country must also have official results of the TOEFL exam mailed to UWW by the application deadline.  Applicants who have received a grade of “B” or better on two composition courses in an American college or university may be exempt from the TOEFL requirement.  The exemption is not automatic, but based on a review of the complete academic history.

UMass Amherst Financial Aid Application Deadlines:

APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID EARLY!   We encourage all applicants intending to apply for financial aid to do so as early as possible in the admissions process.  It's not necessary to have completed and submitted a UWW application before submitting the FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid – very detailed) . So get your materials in early, and help yourself to a smoother enrollment and payment procedure. You will need the University of Massachusetts Amherst FAFSA school code number, it is 002221. 

Until the FAFSA has been submitted, your financial aid package cannot be prepared.
