WHAT IS UVC-TV 19?

___UVC-TV 19 is the Union Video Center, UMass' student-run television station. As part of the University's Housing Services Cable Network, UVC airs to 11,000 viewers on campus via a closed circuit system. Soon, we'll also be streaming online, available 24/7 anywhere in the world.
___UVC is a non-profit organization supported by the dedication of students with an interest in television, video production, and cablecasting. Here, we provide full-time UMass undergraduate students with access to a variety of audio & video equipment and video editing workstations. We also offer workshops teaching the proper use of our equipment. Through UVC, students cover campus-wide events and guest lectures, providing an alternative source of news and information to the University community. Students have the opportunity to produce their own show, movies, documentary and air them on UVC.
___If you are just looking to get your hands on the equipment and learn how to use it, there are plenty of UVC sanctioned events which need taping. UVC also has some weekly shows that need crew to operate successfully. If you're interested in getting involved, don't hesitate to come down to the station and let us know.

___UVC-TV 19 is located at in the basement of the Student Union, next to the Hatch. If you're facing the Hatch, turn right and follow to the end of the hall. We're in Room 216.

WHEN WAS UVC ESTABLISHED? | back to top
___The Student Video Project was organized in 1974 to train UMass students in all aspects of video production. In 1978, the Project was renamed the Union Video Center after having evolved into a fully-operating television station. At the time the campus station was modeled after the public access programming of the 1970's, laying the foundation for our current informative and entertaining format. In 1995, the station adopted UVC-TV 19 as the official title.


WHAT KIND OF PROGRAMMING IS AIRED ON UVC?

___We air a variety of programs on UVC. Our regular rotation includes tapings of numerous guest lectures by individuals such as Bill Cosby, Russell Simmons, and Ben Stein. We also air recordings of various musicians who have played at UMass, including Ben Kweller, Goldfinger, and Matisyahu. In addition to airing various events in the area, we also have a number of original UVC programs, such as UMass This Week, UMass Sports Weekly, and The Psychiatrist. WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT IS USED AT UVC?

___UVC-TV 19 utilizes a full range of MiniDV and S-VHS equipment. Accessed members (those who have gone through the four initial workshops: Pre-Production/Cablecasting, Multicam, Camcorder and Editing) have access to our equipment, which includes JVC multicams, Sony and Canon camcorders, tripods, microphones and lighting kits. We have a couple of digital non-linear editing workstations each running Final Cut Pro 4, audio boards and mixers, and an analog editing system. We also have a character generator and graphic computer loaded with Scala, which is used to produce the daily Message Board that runs on channel 19 between programs. Our studio includes backdrops, a news desk, and a bluescreen wall with an accompanying floor for full-figure chromakeying capabilities.
