Vice President Report 2000-2001

During November 2000, I was re-elected to a second term as USA Vice President (of course running unopposed didn't hurt!), and have been continuing to serve the Association in several ways. First, as the Vice President, I have represented USA as acting President during President Johnson's attendance at a recent conference. This past March 2nd the annual Read Across America Day (in recognition of Dr. Seusses' Birthday) was observed by USA. I assisted USA member Jackie Gentl and several others in setting up a display of children's literature and two large cakes for the observance. USA has had a great response from the campus to our display in the past, and this year was no different.

I have also continued on as the Chair of USA's Career Ladder Committee. The Committee has been meeting with University management since April 2000. The committee developed guidelines for the application and utilization of funds within the Career Ladder Fund. To date approximately 25% of the membership have applied for and receive reimbursement funding for individual career growth and development goals. This program has been successful from the perspective of both, Association members and University Management. The continued funding of this program is a goal during this contract cycle. My service to the Association continues as a current member of the Contract Bargaining Team, and as an appointee to other task force committee's such as Technology and UHS.

I have found my past year's work for the Association to be challenging, requiring a substantial time commitment, and at times, perplexing. But it has also provided me with opportunities for learning more about our Association's diverse workforce, and the issues that confront them. I feel extremely privileged to represent the University Staff Association at the many levels that I do. Thank you to my Executive Board colleagues, and to the Association membership for this opportunity .

Respectfully Submitted,
Jim Plaza
