University Relations Portfolio

GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS

The Office of Government and Community Relations represents UMass Amherst with our state and federal governments and our local communities. We work to advance the interests of the campus by developing positive relationships with state legislators and the executive branch of state government, members of the U.S. Congress, and local municipal officials and community leaders. We promote the benefits that our campus brings to local communities, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the nation, and advocate for increased funding for the University.

Federal Relations

Our Federal Relations program focuses on bringing increased federal dollars to UMass Amherst, particularly for research programs. Working strategically with campus researchers and leaders, we align federal funding opportunities with our campus research priorities, then take the case to members of Congress, primarily the Massachusetts delegation.

State Government Relations

The Office of State Government Relations provides a vital link between the UMass Amherst campus and the State Legislature, the Governor, and his Executive offices, by advocating campus priorities and educating these constituencies on the work and value of the Commonwealth’s public research university.

We work to influence legislation including the annual state budget appropriation, respond to legislative inquiries, and connect legislators to campus resources.

We also inform and engage UMass Amherst supporters through the UMass Amherst Advocacy Update e-newsletter to advocate on behalf of the Amherst campus to key opinion leaders.

Community Relations

The Office of Community Relations serves as the liaison between the university and its neighbors. The director represents the university to area municipalities and civic organizations and brings community concerns to the attention of the campus.

We connect the campus and community through networking and events such as the Community Breakfast; mediate campus and neighborhood conflicts; meet regularly with local officials, and coordinate public forums. We also coordinate the work of the Campus and Community Coalition to Reduce High Risk Drinking
