Introductory Track


1A, 1B & 1C. For the new school nurse, we are offering Introduction to School Health Nursing in Massachusetts (7 PDPs/8.4 Contact Hours) Twice in the Fall (1A & 1B) and once in the Spring (1C).

This program is designed for school nurses who are new to their positions in the 2002-2003 school year ONLY.

The central workshop objective is to enable school nurses to identify standards of school nursing practice and to focus on the role of comprehensive school health programs. Content includes:

  • An overview of school nursing in the Commonwealth
  • A review of laws, mandated programs and policies relating to school health service
  • legal aspects and directions on documentation in school health records.

We urge all new school nurses to attend one of these programs where you will meet the state school health advisors and the other new school nurses in your area.

A program on performing Vision & Hearing Screening (4 PDPs/4.8 Contact Hours) and Postural Screening (3 PDPs/3.6 Contact Hours) will be held on the days following the Fall and Spring Introduction Workshops. These Vision and Hearing programs are for school nurses who have NOT had previous experience with equipment used in these mandated screenings. Please bring your testing equipment.

Audience: Limited to school nurses (RN/BSN/MSN), new in their position in 2002-2003 only.


2A - Update on School Health for Experienced School Nurses Fall 2003

Join us for a full day program of timely information and professional networking. Topics include obesity programs, substance use and abuse, and effective school health marketing techniques. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: Limited to school nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) only.

Faculty: Experts on School Health and School Nursing.


2B - Update on School Health for Experienced School Nurses Spring 2003

Join us for a full day program of timely information and professional networking. Topics include ADHD, women’s health across the life span, and succeeding in your organization. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: Limited to school nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) only.

6 - Immunization and Vaccine Update

As the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) have reached an all time low, parental and provider concerns about vaccine safety have increased. Join the staff of the Mass. Immunization Program to address these concerns, including immunization requirements/schedules, exemptions/exclusion guidelines, vaccine safety, VPD surveillance and control, and immunization resources. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), SBHC staff, school administrators, and community and public health nurses.

Faculty: Experts from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Immunization Program.


7 - Preschool Health and Safety: Standards and Resources

This program will present information relevant to the care of children 3-5 years of age in the school setting. Standards and resources designed to protect the health and safety of these children will be presented as well an overview of specific issues related to child and playground safety. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), SBHC staff, school administrators, teachers, and guidance counselors, and community and public health nurses.

8 - Protecting and Preventing Childhood Blindness

Standards, skills, and resources designed to protect the visual health and safety of preschool and school aged children will be presented as well an overview of specific issues including screenings, eye protection and safety, and eye emergencies. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), SBHC staff, and community and public health nurses.

9 - Health Assessment


10 - Oral Health

This is a series of two programs. The first program will provide an outline of the 5 elements recommended for a school health program in oral health: screening, fluoride use, dental sealants, injury prevention, and oral health education. This day is recommended for participants new to this information. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

The second program is a more detailed description and discussion for participants experienced in oral health who are interested in how to more effectively develop programs in the critical 5 areas of oral health in schools. (3 PDPs/3.6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), SBHC staff, school administrators, teachers, and guidance counselors, and community and public health nurses.

12 - Pharmacology Update

Obtain updated information on common pharmacologic agents used in the management of childhood illness, including infection, pain, mental and behavioral health, and chronic illness. Commonly used club drugs and their impact on health and wellness will be included. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

13 - Clinical Update I: Diabetes and Dermatology

This program presents updated information on Type 2 Diabetes, the management of children with diabetes, and assessment and intervention of children with dermatological disorders. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), health educators, and community and public health nurses.

Faculty: Lisa Sterling, MPH, RN, MDHP Diabetes Control Program and experts in endocrine and skin disorders.


14 - Clinical Update II: Asthma and other Respiratory Illness

Learn the latest information on the assessment, management, and referral of children and youth with asthma and other respiratory ailments. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), health educators, and community and public health nurses.

15 - Orthopedic Assessment and Intervention

Enhance your orthopedic knowledge and skill by attending this interactive program providing updated information on the assessment, management, and referral of children and youth with orthopedic abnormalities and injuries. Sports readiness and prevention will be highlighted. Come prepared to practice assessment techniques. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

17 - Integrating Care of Children with Special Heath Care Needs

This program presents an overview of trends in medical technology and pediatric chronic illness and the implications for school care. Includes the development of health care plans, delegation, MASSTART, and steps in integrating special needs children into the school setting. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

18 - Creating Effective Mental Health Initiatives

Meet the challenge of creating successful mental health initiatives by increasing your knowledge and skill in the use of risk assessment tools and effective mental health interventions. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

19 - Violence Prevention

This program will present information on violence prevention initiatives that can be used to create healthy communities for children and youth. Topics include bullying, mediation, sexual assault, dating violence, and sexual harassment. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), SBHC staff, school administrators, teachers, and guidance counselors, and community and public health nurses.

Faculty: Staff from the MDPH Violence Prevention Unit and regional Women’s Services Agencies.


20 - Understanding and Promoting the Safe Schools Initiative in Massachusetts

Learn about the Safe Schools Program in Massachusetts, designed to implement the state recommendations on the support and safety of gay and lesbian students. Examine interventions aimed at the individual and school level to address issues of safety for gay and lesbian youth in Massachusetts: anti-harassment policies, school personnel training, and school based support for youth and families. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

21 - Preventing Tobacco Use and Abuse

The mandate to prevent tobacco use and abuse necessitates state of the science information and an understanding of successful prevention and deterrence programs. This program will present current information on smoking in youth and help participants to design effective tobacco control initiatives. (3 PDPs/3.6 Contact Hours).

22 - Practical Guide to Emergency Planning in Your School

Responding to emergencies in a timely and effective manner is a critical issue facing Massachusetts communities. This program will assist you in developing policies and responses to emergencies that may occur in our communities and schools. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

Audience: All School Health Personnel including School Nurses (RN/BSN/MSN) and School Physicians (MD), SBHC staff, EMS personnel, school administrators, teachers, and guidance counselors, and community and public health nurses/professionals. Strongly recommended, though not mandatory, to bring a team from your school.

Faculty: Staff from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and a panel of regional experts who have implemented effective emergency response systems.


23 - Environmental Health Issues: Creating Effective Responses

This program provides the latest information on a variety of environmental health issues impacting on schools in Massachusetts, including indoor air quality, chemical storage, and pesticide use in schools. Strategies for addressing environmental quality will be presented. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

24 - Using the School Health Index to Improve the Health of Students

This program will provide information on how to use the School Health Index, a no cost self-assessment and evaluation tool from the CDC that helps school teams identify the strengths and weaknesses of their school’s health policies and programs and develop an action plan to improve student health based on those results. This index will be required for many MDPH grants in the near future. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

25 - Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum: Framework Relevancy for School Health Practice

This program will help school personnel to comprehend the Commonwealth’s comprehensive health curriculum and to work with it with greater relevancy, including the development of professional development plans. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

26 - Leadership Strategies and Skills I

27 - Leadership II: Moving Forward

This program is intended for school health personnel and leaders who are interested in furthering their leadership skills. Learn to develop your leadership style and to enhance your ability to perform as a leader and improve your organizational performance – leading the way to a healthy and highly productive organizational climate. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

28 - Supervision and Evaluation Across Multiple Settings

This program will assist school nurse leaders with the tools they need to provide nursing supervision across multiple school sites. Topics include orientation, “desktop” and “onsite” supervision, communication, staff meetings, evaluation and much more. (5 PDPs/6 Contact Hours).

34 - N-O-T (Not on Tobacco) Cessation Program Training

N-O-T is the school based teen stop smoking program from the American Lung Association. Developed just for teens, this program really can help kids succeed at something that’s really hard to do…stop smoking. This workshop will train you to implement this highly effective, 10 session/4 booster session, gender sensitive program in your school setting. Workshop fee includes a complete set of all necessary curriculum materials to implement this program.(6 PDPs/7.2 Contact Hours).

35 - Adolescent Health Conference: State of the Discipline
