University of Massachusetts Press Publishing Internships

The University of Massachusetts Press is a scholarly publisher located on the UMass Amherst campus. For fifty years the press has published books of outstanding scholarship written by faculty and writers throughout the United States and beyond. By publishing works of peer-reviewed scholarship, the UMass Press supports and enhances the university’s role as a major research institution.

Internships at the University of Massachusetts Press are excellent opportunities for students with an interest in scholarly publishing to work in our marketing, production, editorial, and business departments, and provide practical, entry-level experience in the publishing field.

Publicity & Marketing Internship

Interns will learn various skills pertaining to promoting scholarly books, such as creating marketing plans for individual books, strategizing social media campaigns, writing press releases, and maintaining a database. Publicity & Marketing internship applications for the fall 2017 semester are closed.

Production Internship

Interns will assist the production office with various duties, including participating in the design and layout of marketing materials using InDesign and other Creative Suite software; corresponding with authors about the artwork to be included in their books; logging art materials into the publishing database; processing corrections for in-house composition projects; and preparing files and other tasks related to digital publishing management.

Press hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Internship hours are flexible within the hours of operation to fit student needs. Interns will have an opportunity to rotate their positions within the Press, gaining an overall understanding of how a small publishing house operates.

Internships are unpaid, for credit only.

Positive attitude, attention to detail, proofreading and good organizational skills, and word processing experience are essential. Desired software experience includes Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign. Familiarity with databases, the Internet, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat Professional (to create and manipulate PDFs) is a plus. Experience with both Macs and PCs preferred. Social media savvy is most welcome.
