University of Massachusetts Press is a scholarly publisher located on the UMass Amherst campus. For more than fifty years the Press has published outstanding scholarship and general interest books written by faculty and writers throughout the United States and beyond. By publishing works of peer-reviewed scholarship in print and digital formats, UMass Press supports and enhances the university’s role as a major research institution.
Internships at University of Massachusetts Press are excellent opportunities for students with an interest in publishing to gain practical, entry-level experience in the publishing field. Interns are encouraged to ask questions about publishing and observe and learn more about the day-to-day operations of a scholarly press.
2018 Summer Internship
Press summer interns have the unique opportunity to observe all stages of the publishing process. Working closely with our acquisitions, business, production, and marketing departments, interns will take on a range of responsibilities as they evaluate manuscripts and proposals, assist with permissions, check proofs and manuscripts, research sales and marketing leads, design marketing materials, correspond with authors, implement social media campaigns, and assist with awards submissions. On occasion, the intern will be called upon to perform office-related tasks, including databasing, mailing, and filing.
2018-2019 Academic Year Internship in Production
Interns will assist the production office with various tasks, including layout and typesetting, working in Microsoft Word, Scribe, and Adobe Creative Suite—especially InDesign; assist with character counts and castoffs; evaluate art for print quality and color checks; log art specs and metadata into the press wide database; process corrections for in-house composition projects; prepare files and other processes related to editorial, design, and production management. Preference goes to applicants who can work both Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters.
Press hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. While internship hours are flexible within the hours of operation to fit student needs, we ask for a minimum commitment of 10-12 hours per week.
Internships are unpaid, for credit only.
Positive attitude, attention to detail, proofreading and strong organizational skills, and word processing experience are essential. Desired software experience includes Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign. Familiarity with databases, the Internet, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat Professional (to create and manipulate PDFs) is a plus. Experience with both Macs and PCs preferred. Social media savvy is most welcome.
