University of Massachusetts Press Publishing Internships
The University of Massachusetts Press is a scholarly publisher located on the UMass Amherst campus. For over forty years the press has published books of outstanding scholarship written by faculty and writers throughout the United States and beyond. By publishing works of peer-reviewed scholarship, the UMass Press supports and enhances the university’s role as a major research institution.
The UMass Press currently has internship positions available for eager, hard-working undergraduates who would like to gain practical, entry-level experience in the publishing field.
This is an excellent opportunity for students with an interest in scholarly publishing to work in our publicity, marketing, business, and production departments.
Publicity / Marketing Internships
Interns will assist with various duties such as identifying key review media for review lists; producing electronic news releases; processing book reviews; writing letters of declination; posting reviews and updating online content; maintaining a marketing and promotion database; and assisting in the distribution of seasonal catalog information to online vendors and wholesalers. Students also will assist with processing annual Juniper poetry and fiction competition submissions.
Business Administration Internships
Interns will assist with various business administration projects, including royalties tracking and author correspondence; processing copyright permissions requests; inventory maintenance; sales history reports; research on new markets; providing publication updates to the press distributor; gathering and shipping exhibit material; and updating the publishing database. Non-business majors are encouraged to apply.
Production and Design Internships
Interns will assist the production office with various duties, including participating in the design and layout of marketing materials using InDesign and other Creative Suite software; corresponding with authors about the artwork to be included in their books; logging art materials into the publishing database; processing corrections for in-house composition projects; and preparing files and other tasks related to digital publishing management.
Schedule
Press hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Internship hours are flexible within the hours of operation to fit the students’ needs. Interns will have an opportunity to rotate their positions within the Press, gaining an overall understanding of how a small publishing house operates.
Internships are unpaid, for credit only.
