About the University of Massachusetts Press
Founded in 1963, the University of Massachusetts Press is the book-publishing arm of the University of Massachusetts. Its mission is to publish first-rate books, edit them carefully, design them well, and market them vigorously. In so doing, it supports and enhances the university's role as a major research institution.
We think of book publishing as a collaborative venturea partnership between author and Press staffand we work hard to see that our authors are happy with every phase of the process.
Since its inception, the Press has sold more than 2,000,000 volumes. Today it has over 900 titles in print. Seven employees, along with student assistants and outside sales representatives, produce and distribute some thirty to forty new titles annually. Sales representatives include the Columbia Consortium (for bookstores in the continental United States), Scholarly Book Services (Canada), the Eurospan Group (United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East), and East-West Export Books (Asia, the Pacific, and Hawaii). Warehousing and order fulfillment functions are handled by Hopkins Fulfillment Services.
The Press imprint is overseen by a faculty committee, whose members represent a broad spectrum of University departments. New titles are approved by the committee after a rigorous process of peer review. In addition to publishing works of scholarship, the Press produces books of more general interest for a wider readership.
The Press is a full member of the Association of American University Presses.

On July 1, 2004, UMass Press moved to new offices
Built in 1890 to house the Department of Vegetable Pathology, the East Experiment Station was designed by architect Emory Ellsworth in the Richardson Romanesque style, with arched windows, brownstone lintels, sculpted downspouts, and rusticated stone and brick construction. Each office on the first floor has rectangular panels of stained glass above the windows. Although the ornate Victorian greenhouse is gone, the building was carefully refurbished for our use.
