A Message from the Chief
The University of Massachusetts Police Department is a full service police department with 63 sworn officers. Our officers receive municipal police academy training and have full authority to enforce the laws of the Commonwealth. We have built a strong tradition of effective crime fighting, traffic management and community outreach. The University has made significant investments in technology and emergency notification systems to ensure your safety.
Our purpose is to help you achieve your research, teaching and learning goals in a safe and orderly environment. Further, we appreciate the importance of cultural and social growth. That is why we provide resources to support activities such as performances at the Fine Arts Center, Mullins Center events, athletic events, cultural events and dances.
Traffic safety efforts are a top priority for our agency and we are committed to aggressive and innovative traffic enforcement and safety programs. Our enforcement efforts continue to target speed, pedestrian safety, impaired driving and other behaviors that put us all at risk. We urge you to take advantage of our educational programs on traffic safety, personal safety, emergency preparedness and residential hall security.
Recognizing it takes a university community to grow scholars, we believe every member of the campus community has shared accountability for the success of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. As such, we are honored to participate in the academic process.
