Safety Escorts and Transportation
UMass Amherst provides a variety of ways to get around campus safely after dark so that no one needs to walk alone. If you don’t have friends or co-workers to accompany you across campus at night, please take advantage of these services.
Walking Escort Service
The UMPD provides a free walking escort service during the academic year for all members of the UMass Amherst community and campus visitors. Walking teams of students with mobile radios are available for safe escort across campus every night from 7:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. (call 413-545-2123).
UMass Transit Campus Shuttle
The free campus shuttle service (PVTA Routes 34 & 35) keeps students safe by minimizing the need to walk alone. The buses travel throughout UMass Amherst and run from approximately 7:00 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. Visit the UMass Transit Web site for maps and schedules.
Around the Pioneer Valley
For students leaving or returning to campus after dark, Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) buses provide safe transportation. Buses are available to and from downtown Amherst and other parts of town, including Amherst College and Hampshire College.
Buses also run to Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Smith College, and other areas in Northampton, the local malls, and other parts of the Pioneer Valley. During the academic year, all of the buses are free. Routes and schedules for PVTA buses are available on the UMass Transit Web site.
