Citizen Academy to Begin October 6

Application Deadline is September 12

UMass Police Chief Johnny Whitehead announced that the UMass Amherst Police Department will conduct its first Citizens Police Academy in the Fall 2009.

The Citizens Academy is an 8-week program that will provide an opportunity to learn about the duties, responsibilities and capabilities of the UMass Police Department. Classroom sessions will cover a wide range of topics including criminal and constitutional law, motor vehicle enforcement, alcohol and drug enforcement, and more.

Participants will be able to observe demonstrations from specialized units such as the K9, mounted, motorcycle, and bicycle patrol units, as well as the tactical arrest and control team. Students will also participate in several hands-on learning scenarios throughout the program.

Students will meet once a week from October 6, 2009 to November 18, 2009. Students must attend all eight sessions (3 hours each) to receive a certificate. All classes will begin at 6 pm and end no later than 9 pm. The Academy is open to students, faculty, staff and family members of the UMass community. Residents of the Towns of Amherst and Hadley are also encouraged to apply.

Class size is limited to the first 20 candidates. The deadline for application is September 12, 2009. No prior law enforcement knowledge is required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
