Attempted Unarmed Robbery/Assault and Battery

Location: Campus Center Garage at UMass Amherst

On Monday, September 17, 2012, at approximately 10:45 AM a UMass student reported to the University Police Department that he was the victim of an Attempted Unarmed Robbery and Assault & Battery while walking in the Campus Center Garage at 10:10 AM.
While walking in a stairwell, the victim was approached from behind by an unknown male who attempted to steal the victim’s wallet from his rear pocket. When the victim resisted, the suspect struck the victim in the face with his right fist and knocked him to the ground. No weapon was displayed. The only description of the suspect is that he was “older -- not student age -- and wearing grey clothes.” The suspect fled the area and is still at large. The victim refused medical treatment.

UMass Police is actively pursuing this case and seeks information that might help to identify a suspect. Anyone with information that could be helpful is encouraged to contact the University of Massachusetts Police Department at (413) 545-8477, or online at
