Seals, logos, and other marks
Specific graphic elements, colors, and typefaces have been chosen to create awareness and recognition of and loyalty toward the UMass Amherst brand, by giving documents and publications a unique, coherent appearance.
All UMass Amherst marks:
- are the exclusive property of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and their use is protected by law.
- must be reproduced from official artwork.
- must be clearly legible at all times.
- have been specially configured, and cannot be altered or redrawn in any way.
- are designed to be used as one unit, and the letterforms must never be separated from the accompanying marks.
Official artwork is available for download in various formats below. These files can be proportionally scaled, within the above guidelines, in programs like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. See Web Downloads for selected marks optimized for the Web.
Academic Marks
The UMass Amherst Wordmarks and Campus Seal are used for materials related to the campus's academic mission. These two graphic elements communicate the integrity and tradition of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Wordmarks
Wordmarks identify UMass Amherst in publications, online, on signage and on merchandise.
Campus Seal
The Campus Seal is the official mark of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Documents, print, and online publications, or merchandise items displaying the Campus Seal imply official sanction by the university.
Combinations
The Campus Seal can be combined with the UMass Amherst Wordmarks or name graphics in print and online publications or on merchandise.
Spirit Marks
The Minuteman, UMass Athletic Letters and other informal Spirit Marks are used to communicate school spirit, particularly in conjunction with UMass Athletics. These marks are not appropriate for academic materials.
All athletic marks other then those available for download on this Web site are limited to the Department of Athletics and certain university licensees. If you have questions regarding their use, please email Trademarks and Licensing Services or call 413-577-0125.
Minuteman
The Minuteman, also fondly referred to as "Sam the Minuteman," is one of the Spirit Marks that communicates school spirit, and is used on a wide range of informal print, product, and Web applications. It would be appropriate, for example, to have "Sam" printed on napkins in the dining halls but not on an academic department Web site. The mascot, shown here in its officially authorized poses, are copyrighted and trademarked by UMass Amherst.
Athletic Letters
Both the "UM" and the "UMass" athletic letters are popular marks for merchandise and are used for a wide range of items, especially apparel. Whether in products or print applications, these marks are most often associated with classic spirit and collegiate traditions. The core components of the athletic letters cannot be altered, but the black control space directly under the primary mark can be modified to reflect the organizations name or identifiers. For incorporation of the correct font and size, requests for modifications to the control area must be submitted to the University Licensing and Trademark Office, via email or by phone at 413-577-0125.
Athletic Letter Combination
The Athletic Letter Combination is a spirit mark that can be used for print materials or products.
