New leaders walk the walk

This fall, a new line of administrators stepped up to lead several high offices on campus. From left to right: 

Jean Kim ’73, ’77G, interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life
Kim is a UMass Amherst alumna who launched her career in the Office of Student Affairs and Campus Life. She most recently served as vice chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life at UMass Dartmouth, where she oversaw 17 departments and an annual budget of $40 million. 

Debora Ferreira ’93, Executive Director of Equal Opportunity and Diversity
Executive director since 2006, Ferreira recently assumed additional responsibilities under Chancellor Robert C. Holub, who has asked her to develop a diversity plan for campus. Prior to UMass Amherst, she was a diversity issues consultant for businesses, schools, and higher education institutions. Ferreira also worked in the Maine Attorney General’s Office, where she focused on civil rights issues in schools. She earned degrees in Afro-American Studies and Legal Studies at UMass Amherst, and her law degree from Boston College Law School in 1996.

James V. Staros, Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
A dean at Stony Brook, (one of the State University of New York’s four university centers) since 2002, Staros led that school’s efforts to increase undergraduate retention and graduation rates. Before that, Staros held teaching and administrative posts at Vanderbilt University since 1978. He earned a customized bachelor’s in biology and chemistry at Dartmouth College in 1969, a PhD in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University in 1974, and further studied chemistry at Harvard University.

Mike Malone ’79PhD, Vice Chancellor, Research and Engagement
Malone served as dean of the College of Engineering at UMass Amherst since 2004. Since 2003, Malone has also been the Ronnie and Eugene M. Isenberg Distinguished Professor of Engineering, a position created to enhance interdisciplinary teaching and research among the fields of management, engineering, and science. His research is in processes design and innovation. At UMass Amherst, Malone has been recognized for his excellence in teaching, include winning a Distinguished Teaching Award, the highest campus honor for classroom instruction. 


Steve Goodwin, Dean, College of Natural Sciences

Goodwin served as associate dean and then dean of the College of Natural Resources and the Environment before it merged this fall with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics to create the new College of Natural Sciences.. A faculty member since 1986, Goodwin’s research on microbial synthesis and degradation of biopolymers, microbial ecology, and anaerobic digestion and bioremediation has been supported by more than $2.4 million in grants.
