Lecture: "Darwin Gets Swine Flu: Celebrating the Origin of Species in an Age of Pandemics"

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s pioneering On the Origin of Species, the Graduate Program in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology is proud to host a presentation by noted science writer Carl Zimmer.

Zimmer is well known for his popular science writing, particularly his work on evolution. He has published seven books, including Evolution: Triumph of an Idea and At the Water’s Edge. His latest book, The Tangled Bank: An Introduction to Evolution, has been praised by E.O. Wilson as the best written and best illustrated introduction to evolution in the last decade. Zimmer’s seminar will be followed by a reception and book signing in the ISB Lobby.

In addition to frequent contributions to the New York Times, National Geographic, Discover, Science, and Popular Science, Zimmer maintains an award-winning blog, The Loom.

A full day of activities, organized by OEB grad students, will take place in the Campus Center Concourse, including raffles, games, and free food. At 4:00 p.m., Zimmer, and maybe even Darwin himself, will draw the raffle prizes of autographed copies of The Tangled Bank and On the Origin of Species!
