Amherst and UMass Police Youth Adventure Academy
A free Amherst and UMass Police Youth Adventure Academy for students entereing grades 6-8 is being offered.
Sponsored by the Amherst Police Department and UMass Police Department, the program is similar to a citizens police academy. Students will attend morning classroom sessions held at both police departments with lectures, role-plays and interactive demonstrations by police officers in the areas of law, crime scene investigation, defensive tactics, patrol procedures and Internet safety. Most afternoon sessions will be held at the Amherst Adventure Based Ropes Course at the Norwottuck Range, where activities will promote teamwork, communication and strategy development.
Academy size is limited to 20, so preference will be given to Amherst residents and youth whose parents or guardians are UMass employees or students. To be eligible, youth must be entering grades 6-8 this fall.
