Pa Kua Chang & Tai Chi Chuan: Internal Kung Fu at UMass

The UMass Inner Arts Club offers comprehensive training in Pa Kua, Tai Chi, and related practices for health and self defense year-round.

Pa Kua Chang (Baguazhang: "Eight Trigrams Palm") is a rare yet complete system of self-defense, healing and meditation, based on the I-Ching. Its hallmark practice consists of vigorously walking in a circle and changing directions while performing twisting, coiling sequences of movements. Note: Pa Kua training is generally more physically challenging then our entry level Tai Chi classes, and are held outdoors year-round. No experience is necessary, but training is for the serious student only. Meets on Thursdays, 6:30-8:00 p.m. (exception: class meets Wednesday, June 17th).

Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) is the best known of the three Chinese internal "sister" healing / martial arts. Our classes are relaxing energizing, and fun, move at an enjoyable pace, and are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. No prior experience is necessary.

Classes meets outdoors during the warmer months, and indoors from October through the end of April on Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings.

All classes are ongoing; you may start at any time, or join a new group of Tai Chi beginners on Wednesday, June 17th at 5:30 pm. This class will continue on Thursdays the following week.
