Massachusetts Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting
The Massachusetts Academy of Sciences would like to announce their first annual meeting. The public is invited to this event, which will feature a keynote address by the nationally recognized science educator and television personality Bill Nye the Science Guy. Host of his own self-named television series as well as series on the Science Channel and Planet Green Network, Bill Nye has also appeared on the popular shows Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Stargate Atlantis.
The Massachusetts Academy of Sciences, founded in 2008, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote public understanding and appreciation of the sciences, to support scientific research and education in areas relevant to the needs of the state, and to provide consultative and advisory services on matters of science to the Governor, and to local, state, and federal agencies. In its short existence, the MAS has already been making inroads in supporting science education and outreach, hosting ten award-winning Massachusetts high school students at the annual Massachusetts Science Fair, participating in science classroom outreach at local schools, and building a presence at the national conferences of organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In April the MAS held its first major event, a well-attended summit on the governor's Readiness Project to overhaul education in Massachusetts.
The annual meeting will also feature children's activities including encounters with live animals, a demonstration booth hosted by the Massachusetts Science Club for Girls, podcast premiers by the MAS interns, a poster session by the Massachusetts Junior Academy of Sciences science fair winners, and a live birds of prey presentation by raptor rehabilitator Tom Ricardi.
This event is free for MAS members and their immediate families, and $20 for nonmembers and their immediate families. It is also free for all pre-K through grade 12 science teachers, with preregistration required.
