Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood
Join us for the Valley premiere of the Media Education Foundation's powerful new film Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood. The screening will take place at the Academy of Music in Northampton, Massachusetts.
Consuming Kids sheds desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multibillion-dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. The film traces the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world.
Consuming Kids was produced locally by the Media Education Foundation. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Northampton Public Schools' Arts Enrichment Programs and the Northampton Arts Council's KidsBestFest.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Susan Linn, author of the bestselling book Consuming Kids; child advocate Enola Aird, founder and director of the Brooklyn-based Motherhood Project; and the producers of the film.
Admission will be $10 for the general public and $5 for students and seniors. The box office opens at 6:30 p.m. on the night of the event.
