Lecture: Healthcare Operations Research: Examples from the Mayo Clinic
Professor Hari Balasubramanian of the UMass Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering will deliver this lecture as part of the Spring 2009 Operations Research / Management Science Seminar series. All are invited to attend.
The topic of this lecture is "Healthcare Operations Research: Examples from the Mayo Clinic."
Abstract: Operations research has been increasingly used in healthcare in the last decade to address cost and efficiency issues. In this talk, we discuss several healthcare operations research problems including: efficient design of primary care practices to improve timely access and patient-physician continuity; the planning and scheduling of outpatient surgical suites; and the design of screening strategies for prostate cancer. We use specific examples from the Mayo Clinic to describe these problems and present quantitative solution approaches. We also discuss the broader health policy issues that underlie some of these problems and that are part of the national debate on healthcare reform.
