SMART Recovery Self-Help Meeting

A new SMART Recovery free self-help group meets every Wednesday. Lili Landrau, a University Without Walls student, is the volunteer facilitator for the meetings.

SMART Recovery® (Self Management And Recovery Training) is an evidence based self-help group to help people recover from addictions or harmful behaviors. Our purpose is to support individuals who have chosen to abstain, or are considering abstinence from any type of addictive behaviors (substances or activities), by teaching how to change self-defeating thinking, emotions, and actions; and to work towards long-term satisfactions and quality of life. Our approach teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance. Our efforts are based on scientific knowledge and evolve as scientific knowledge evolves.

SMART Recovery is based on the principles of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), developed by Albert Ellis, Ph.D. (1913-2007) in the 1950s and on cognitive behavioral theories. REBT is a widely accepted form of therapy, used by professionals worldwide. The program offers specific tools and techniques for each of the program points:

Point 1: Enhancing and Maintaining Motivation to Abstain

Point 2: Coping with Urges

Point 3: Problem Solving (Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors)

Point 4: Lifestyle Balance (Balancing momentary and enduring satisfactions)

SMART Recovery respects all forms of solutions, from whatever source, and supports personal responsibility and personal choice.

What SMART Recovery® is not:

It is NOT an attack on Alcoholic Anonymous or those who find AA to be their solution.
It is NOT a program which you are expected to attend the rest of your life.
It is NOT a simple or magic solution. Recovery takes time, commitment and energy.
