Exhibit: Puerto Rican History and Culture

Students in the Department of Communication course COMM 497F, "Spanish Language Media and Latina/o Cultural Production," taught by Associate Professor Mari Castañeda, are bringing an exhibit titled "Puerto Rican History and Culture" to the UMass Amherst campus.

This exhibit was first seen at the Wistariahurst Museum in 2007, and it was the product of YouthBuild students in Holyoke who worked with the museum to explore the history of the Puerto Rican community in a city where Latinos constitute nearly 49% of the population. By bringing this exhibit to UMass Amherst, the COMM 497F students are hoping the campus community will see and appreciate an example of Latino cultural production that often receives very little attention.
