Art of Paper Marbling

The Student Union Craft Center will host a visiting artist workshop entitled "Art of Paper Marbling," conducted by the nationally recognized Chena River Marblers, Regina and Daniel St. John. This program coincides with the Festival of Middle Eastern Arts, produced by the Asian Arts and Culture Program.

The St. Johns have exhibited their artwork in numerous galleries and art centers in Western Massachusetts and across the nation. With more than two decades of marbling expertise, the St. Johns employ marbling techniques which combine ancient traditions with contemporary design elements in the use of color and pattern.

Originating in China and Japan, the craft of marbling traveled the silk route into Persia and Turkey and on to Europe. Inspired by these varied marbling traditions, the work of the St. Johns reflects the rich influences of these cultures.

This program will expose participating students to the historical and intrinsic role paper marbling holds in Arabic and Islamic art. Students will also gain hands-on experience in creating unique and colorful marbleized paper.

"Art of Paper Marbling" will include three workshop sessions, each 1 hour and 45 minutes in length: 11:30am-1:15pm; 1:30-3:15pm; and 3:30-5:15pm. Each workshop will accommodate 12 participants.

A $12 materials fee per student is due at the time of registration. Space permitting, UMass staff and faculty may attend for a fee of $25. All participants must register for this workshop at the Student Union Craft Center. The registration deadline is Wednesday, November 12 at 5:00 p.m. The materials fee is non-refundable.

The Student Union Craft Center is located in the basement of the Student Union Building.

This program is supported by the Student Activities Cultural Enrichment Fund, the UMass Arts Council, the Student Government Association Programming Board, the Graduate Student Senate, and the Asian Arts and Culture Program.
