UMTG Presents Once on This Island
The UMass Theatre Guild, UMass's oldest RSO, will be presenting Once on This Island for one weekend.
Based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid, Once on This Island gives the classic fairytale a dark Caribbean twist. The show opens as a poor village of peasants are comforting a child during a terrible storm. To calm her down they tell her the story of Ti Moune, a young peasant girl who falls in love with a handsome stranger from the other side of the island. Ti Moune prays to the gods to lead her to something bigger and better, but when they interfere in her life, the girl will have the gods to repay.
Once on This Island boasts an incredibly talented cast of sixteen college-aged students from the Five College area and one eight-year-old girl from the community. Island was written by the same team that brought Seussical and Ragtime to Broadway.
Performances will be on November 6, 7, and 8 at 8:00 p.m., with an additional matinee at 2:00 p.m. on November 8.
Tickets will be on sale at the door.
