Theater: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

The American Shakespeare Center performs Tom Stoppard's biting comedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. Presented by the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies, and hosted by the UMass Department of Theater, this production is a wickedly funny companion piece to Hamlet that turns Shakespeare inside out.

The American Shakespeare Center's Stark Raving Sane troupe performs Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead under the direction of Jim Warren. Tom Stoppard, co-writer of the screenplay for the Oscar-winning 1998 film Shakespeare in Love, shows us the Dane's story from the point of view of Hamlet's school chums.

Former local actor Dan Kennedy is featured in this production as "The Player." He is a native of Australia and was very active in theater there before coming to the States with his wife Alex Bannigan, who pursued postdoctoral work at UMass in the biology department.

Another member of the ASC troupe is UMass Department of Theater graduate Ariel Jacobson, who plays a number of roles in R&G Are Dead. While at UMass, Ari appeared in a number of Renaissance Center Theater Company productions.
