Lecture: Abduction, Relief and Doubt in Theorizing New Ideas

"Abduction, Relief and Doubt in Theorizing New Ideas"

Drawing on the concept of abduction, this paper proposes a model that relates abductive reasoning to the generation of new ideas. It is distinctive in its basis in the relationship between belief and doubt and how this relationship mediates researchers’ efforts to generate new ideas. Three conditioning principles are proposed that help researchers cultivate and draw on doubt in theorizing: amplify engagement, permissively explore possibilities, and embrace not knowing.
