Lieux Saints (Sacred Places)
(dir. Jean-Marie Teno, Cameroon, 2008, 75 min, in French w/ English subtitles)
Award-winning filmmaker (and current Copeland Fellow at Amherst College) Jean-Marie Teno presents his work-in-progress, the film Lieux Saints. Teno uses the stories of two men in Ouagadougou--Jules Cesar, a drum-maker, and Bouba, a struggling video club proprietor--to examine the larger issues of contemporary African film production and distribution. Echoing Sembene, he asks, "Does today's African cinema serve as the conscience of the people?"
Co-sponsored by the Amherst College Copeland Fellow Program.
Jean-Marie Teno will introduce and discuss the film.
