Iranian Feminism 1848: Stories of Qurratu'l-Ayn
Sponsored by the English and Gender Studies Department and the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life, Farzaneh Milani and Bahiyyih Nakhjavani will present their latest works concerning Iranian feminism.
Farzaneh Milani, past president of the Association of Middle Eastern Women Studies in America and recipient of the Alumni Teaching Award, is also the author of several books and poems and has written about 100 articles.
Bahiyyih Nakhjavani, who has taught literature at colleges and universities in North America, West Africa, and Europe and has written several books and essays on children's education, the role of women, and the challenges of fundamentalism, will be reading from her latest novel, inspired by the life of Tahirih Qurratu'l-Ayn, the Persian poet and scholar of the nineteenth century Qajar Iran who shocked her contemporaries by her religious beliefs and her rejections of the veil.
