Lecture: Overview of New England's Power System and Markets
ISO New England is the independent organization responsible for overseeing the restructured, or deregulated, wholesale electricity industry in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. ISO-NE meets this obligation in three ways: by ensuring the day-to-day reliable operation of New England's bulk power generation and transmission system, by overseeing and ensuring the fair administration of the region's wholesale electricity markets, and by managing a comprehensive, regional planning processes.
As the administrator for the region's wholesale electricity markets, ISO-NE acts as an electronic auction house for buying and selling electricity at the wholesale level. With a total market value in excess of $10 billion in energy transactions annually, the competitive markets determine the wholesale price of electricity for all of New England. This responsibility, in conjunction with operating the bulk power system and planning for future expansion of the system, helps ISO-NE to keep the lights on every minute of the day, every day of the year.
